Arte Piazza Bibai is an outdoor sculpture museum located in Bibai, Hokkaido. World-renowned sculptor Yasuda Kan from Bibai City and his hometown opened it in 1992 on the site of an elementary school in a closed coal mine, and they are still creating it.
More than 40 marble and bronze works by Kan Yasuda are displayed indoors and outdoors, and the second floor of the wooden school building is a gallery where sculptures are displayed in classrooms that retain remnants of that time. Concerts, dances, lectures, etc. are held in an art space renovated from an old gymnasium and an outdoor stone stage made of marble. In a space surrounded by wooded mountains and clear streams that have been regenerated into the ruins of a coal mine residential district, you can fully enjoy the changing seasons in harmony with the sculptures.
Arte Piazza means plaza for the arts in Italian. There, contemporary sculptures blend deeply with nature and fascinate people. Arte Piazza Bibai presents a new way of nature, people, and art.
